Phoebe Buffay was the quirkiest character in Friends. But many of today's viewers disapprove of her antics, and some of her quotes have not aged well.
Pheobe Buffay from Friends is a somewhat divisive character for the new generation of socially-conscious viewers. Though she enjoys mainstream popularity, modern audiences have expressed reservations about some aspects of her behavior. Her egregious acts include stealing a little girl's cat, breaking the law, and using the saddest aspects of her life to gain sympathy and win favors.
Though Phoebe can be entertaining, much of what she has said and done on the show no longer holds up. She dearly holds on to conventional wisdom but also engages in hypocritical behavior, as seen with her quotes below.
When She Sang Some Inappropriate Songs To Children
"...Then The Farmer Hits Him On The Head And Grinds Him Up..."
In "The One After The Superbowl: Part 1," Phoebe is hired to sing songs to children at a library. She decides it's a perfect opportunity to tell them about life's painful truths. Phoebe deems it fit to serenade school children about dying grandparents and sex. She's let off with a warning, only to come back and sing about barnyard animals in slaughterhouses.
Phoebe singing wildly inappropriate songs is undoubtedly one of the more questionable workplace decisions made on Friends and a violation of parental consent. Some fans likely think she got off easy, and there's no way she would have gone unpunished for scandalizing children with such inappropriate songs today.
When She Had Many Uninformed Opinions
"...Who Put These Fossils There And Why?"
In "The One Where Heckles Dies," Phoebe belligerently sticks to her ignorant opinions on scientific facts such as evolution, gravity, and fossil excavations. She thinks evolution is a little too simplistic, that someone deliberately hid fossils all over the world, and doesn't believe in gravity.
While Phoebe is free to think whatever she wants, her passing off subjective opinions as objective information is unsettling for modern viewers. If everyone had a mindset like hers, there'd be no progress made in science. How hard would it have been for her to admit she didn't have enough information to form an educated opinion, really?
When She Was A Pet Thief
"I Just Have This Really Strong Feeling That This Cat Is My Mother."
Season 4's "The One with the Cat" is when Phoebe's character begins to change for the worst. While likely coming from a place of trauma and grief, she believes a random pet cat is the reincarnated form of her mother and decides to keep it because it walked into her guitar case at the coffee shop. Soon after, it's revealed that that cat's named Julio, and it belongs to a little girl who is looking desperately for it.
While not completely mean-spirited, Phoebe is only thinking of herself in this situation and is blinded by her grief. She uses her loss to her advantage by laying a guilt trip on her friends so they'll let her keep someone else's pet. It's preposterous that a group of fully-grown adults (barring Ross) halfheartedly decide to side with her. Phoebe's selfish act tantamounts to theft, which classifies as a criminal offense in modern legal systems. There were probably more healthier ways to channel her grief without hurting someone else.
When She Asked For Her Money Back Right Away
"I'll Have One, Please. Plus My Money."
When Monica turned down a job catering a funeral in "The One With The Dirty Girl," Phoebe gave her a pep talk and loaned her equipment money without ironing out all the details. The next day, after Monica returned home from work, Phoebe asked to be paid back right away.
While it's understandable that Phoebe may have needed her money back right away, she should have worked this out at the beginning. Making things difficult for her best friend on a show that essentially celebrates friendship just wouldn't fly today.
When She Interrupted Ross's Class
"Could I Just Move In With You For A Couple Of Days?"
Phoebe's disruptive classroom behavior in "The One With Rachel's Book" proved she didn't care about her friend's reputation or his students' precious time. Fans may have found it jarring to watch a character find it reasonable to ask her friend for a favor in the middle of an ongoing class.
Phoebe's total disregard for other people's feelings and time is a huge loss for her character and a turn-off for modern viewers. It's season 7 by this point, and fans strongly feel that Phoebe only got worse with time.
When She Violates Guest Etiquette
"I Am Sorry. I Am With A Client Right Now."
One of the most glaring instances of Phoebe's hypocrisy is also in the above-mentioned episode. As soon as Ross lets Phoebe temporarily move in with him, she converts his living room into a massage room without letting him know. And so, naturally, he's shocked to open his apartment door and see her massaging semi-clad people in his living room.
As uncomfortable as the situation is, poor Ross is shushed the second he opens his mouth to object. Fans find it vexing that Phoebe suddenly has a renewed sense of work ethic when the same morning she disrupted a classroom full of students.
When She Questions Chandler's Masculinity
"Wow, Money And A Firm Hand. Finally A Chandler I Can Get On Board With."
Phoebe felt instantly attracted to Chandler when she saw him decisively set a limit on his wedding budget in "The One with Rachel's Book." Other times in the show, she continued to dismiss his personality as fragile and kept alluding Monica deserved better than him.
Of all the men in the group, Chandler was the most hurt by Phoebe's idea of the outdated alpha-male archetype. Phoebe's jokes perpetuated harmful myths, and her outlook strongly contributed to Chandler's struggles with toxic masculinity, something that surely wouldn't fly today.
When She Was Always The Tattletale
"Tell Him Who You Originally Wanted To Hook Up With That Night."
Phoebe was always the tattletale of the gang and there are numerous instances when her inclination to spill secrets caused people harm. In season 7's "The One With the Truth About London," she revealed an unpleasant piece of information (about Monica originally wanting to spend the night with Joey) in the weirdest way ever.
Phoebe put Monica on spot by nudging her to tell Chandler the truth right when all of them were helping Joey with his officiant ceremony speech. Once again her callous disregard confirmed that she had no place in the tight-knit, loving, and caring friend circle.
When She Decided To Say Yes To David While Still In Love With Mike
"I Love Mike ... David!"
The gang's collective dating record of how they treated their partners was not great and would be frowned upon today. One glaring example of this is when Phoebe decided to marry David while she was still in love with her ex-boyfriend, Mike.
Fans see this as a huge loss for the character in two ways: one, Phoebe succumbed to the pressure and was eager to commit to a man she did not love, and two, she was willfully misleading David into thinking he was her first choice. Moreover, some Millennials and Gen Zers find it old-fashioned that the strongest person of the group longed for external validation via marriage. Had it not been for Mike's interruption, Phoebe would have said yes to David and misled him.
When She Faked Grief
"I Lost My Mom ..."
At the beginning of Friends, Phoebe was visibly sad about her traumatic childhood and used her experiences to shape her future. She was seen empathizing with Rachel on her first night in the city, and her stories became anecdotes for viewers to ponder over.
Though Phoebe overcame her trauma in due course of time, her mother's death and childhood abandonment often came up, as is natural. But over time, she started to use her childhood trauma to gain sympathy and get her own way. In "The One With Joey's New Brain," she used it to get things like the last blueberry muffin at Central Perk. In the current age of emotional awareness, it's no longer okay to fake grief or to use it to take advantage of other people or elicit their sympathy.
