Throwback! Robert Downey Jr. Talks Acting Back in 1987
Before Robert Downey Jr. was Iron Man, he was a Pick-Up Artist.
At the age of 22, he played Jack Jericho and was romancing none other than The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink's Molly Ringwald, a fellow member of what was referred to as the Brat Pack of the '80s, in the 1987 romantic comedy The Pick-Up Artist, which was the first movie to feature Downey in a main role.
In an interview carried out for what is now E!, Downey, looking adorable in a black T-shirt, talked about making the leap from supporting actor to leading man...and it seemed like he wasn't too comfortable being in the spotlight.
"I don't believe in like, supporting casts because I believe everyone is a supporting player and I believe every movie whether you're called the lead or whatever, you're a supporting player," he said.
"Because, you know, Mildred Dunnock plays my grandmother but the movie could easily be about, when I come and go, ‘Hi Grandma, take your medicine,' and then I leave to go out and cruise the streets, you might as well...the movie could be about what she does when I'm gone—playing Checkers or, you know, showering up or something."
