On Schitt's Creek, the fashionable David was always in a statement designer sweater. Which was the very best in the Rose Apothecary owner's closet?
As anyone who's watched Schitt's Creek can attest, the talent of its outrageously comedic cast is only usurped by the costumes they wear, and none captured the spirit of the show quite like David's sweaters. The chic Givenchy pieces and stylish Versace numbers were all curated by Dan Levy himself. He scoured eBay, vintage shops, and sales racks to snag the designer duds for a reasonable price.
The Roses may have suddenly found themselves impoverished in a rural Canadian town, but they were previously worth millions of dollars, requiring that David be seen wearing Alexander McQueen while the show stayed within its budget. Whether he was running away from the Schitt's Creek Motel or stocking the shelves at Rose Apothecary, David had a sweater for every major moment, and it could even be argued every moment was made major with an appearance by one of his best sweaters.
10 Professional Paisley
Going to Heather Warner's goat farm to source her artisan cheese for Rose Apothecary was an important moment for David, and he didn't particularly care that she was Ted's ex-girlfriend and Alexis would be along for the ride. He kept his eye on the professional prize by wearing a paisley-come-floral sweater, the perfect outfit for a budding entrepreneur.
The chic piece, designed by Alexander McQueen, was paired with white jeans in an extreme departure from David's usual black bottom layer. Dressed to impress, he was determined to land the "exclusive account", regardless of his sister's boyfriend baggage.
9 Nonchalance
David wore several slogan pieces throughout the series, beginning with a simple t-shirt to bed that read, "No" in the first season, and a sweater that said "icon" in the final season. But none so accurately represented his sense of humor as the oxymoronic sweater that said "Nonchalance."
The white letters were printed on a plain black background for this garment from Nº21, making it both understated and unmistakably "in your face." The sweater perfectly represented David; outwardly put together, inwardly a neurotic mess.
8 Black Panthers
David wore several Valentino sweaters throughout the latter half of the series, memorably a black one with the statue of "David" broken up across the sleeves and chest. But it was this two-tone piece with the pair of prominent black panthers on the shoulders and arms that really drew attention from fans.
The sweater was not only visually striking, but it also made David come off as authoritative and powerful. Like Moira, he knew how to use fashion and clothing to alter his state of mind and his energy, even if he wasn't feeling confident all the time.
7 Blue And White Floral
While David mostly wore varying shades of black, occasionally he would stun in something white. Towards the end of the first season, as he was navigating the end of his relationship with Stevie, he revealed this show-stopping sweater — maybe to remind her of what she would be missing?.
The white-and-blue garment by Zara fit close to the body, and in order to make it the statement piece it deserved to be, he paired it with a simple white collared shirt underneath to create a preppy, put-together look. It was an unexpected departure from his normal monochromatic wardrobe but that's what made it so memorable.
6 Flame Sweater
Rare was the occasion for David to wear a sweater with color in it, preferring a closet full of gray, white, and black. But in Season 4 he decided to something different and reminded fans that he was pure fire.
Another Givenchy sweater, this garment was bursting with orange and red flames and was much more attention-grabbing than some of his more muted ensembles. Perhaps that's why he chose to wear it to Patrick's performance for open-mic night at Rose Apothecary — it definitely brought the heat into their budding romance.
5 Stars And Stripes Sweater
David memorably wore a star sweater to attend the grand reveal of Moira's rose garden in downtown Schitt's Creek, and he followed it up with another to work at Rose Apothecary.
This number was particularly resonant because it was made entirely of leather and worn in the middle of summer, which Johnny remarked on after he was on a hot streak from Roland's roast. The fetching Givenchy sweater featured David's gothic take on patriotism with stars, stripes, and a striking pop of red.
4 Leopard Print
David didn't often go for something as commercially trendy as animal print, but when he did, he went all in. Like his flirtation with understated camouflage in black and grey, his animal print was totally tasteful, with a light grey sweater covered in leopard spots.
He paired it with some acid-wash jeans, and it became the perfect symbol of him taking a walk on the wild side, finally making his relationship with Patrick official. Completing the Saint Laurent piece were his favorite white sunglasses, and of course his signature silver rings.
3 Aunt Maureen's Funeral Sweater
David wore several long skirts throughout the series to remind viewers that when it comes to fashion, nothing is gender-identified, only fabulous. But he really pulled out all the stops when Stevie's great-aunt Maureen, the original owner of the Schitt's Creek Motel, passed away.
He paid his respects in a long, luxurious cardigan that he coupled with a pair of drop-crotch cropped pants and his ubiquitous black high-top sneakers. It's a silhouette that would come to define David's character and make him unlike anyone else on TV at the time.
2 Mohawk Sweater Dress
David turns out a look when his family finally tracks him down in Season 2, wearing a mohawked hoodie sweater dress by Helmut Lang, accentuated by a pair of shiny Balenciaga sunglasses. Even in the middle of Amish country, he's not about to be upstaged.
The outfit — along with pitchfork accessory — became one of the most iconic of the series, with the sweater cementing the standout style moment. Only David could wear something so outrageous and make it look totally normal. Dan Levy scoured eBay for months until he found it.
1 Black And White Lightning Bolts Sweater
The lightning bolt sweater, the garment David has become most associated with over the course of the series, was a Neil Barrett design that went down in infamy when he wore it to belt out songs at the karaoke bar in Elm Valley.
It captures David's monochromatic yet whimsical aesthetic, while perfectly echoing Moira's flair for the dramatic and Johnny's preference for the streamlined and sensible. It's become one of the most iconic garments from the entire series.
