The Main Characters, Sorted Into Their Hogwarts Houses

The latest entry in the Pixar oeuvre is the coming-of-age story set in a fantastical version of the Italian seaside, Luca. Directed by Enrico Casarosa, Luca is the 2021 entrant for the Pixar canon and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was also unfortunately shuffled off to Disney Plus exclusivity.

On the positive side, it makes the movie available to a much wider and more immediate audience. It seems Luca would've been stunning on the big screen, but the strength of the characters and the story and the vibes is enough to make it a charming watch from the homestead, as well. Each character is well-defined enough to consider how they'd fit into the Hogwarts houses of Harry Potter, too.

10 Luca: Ravenclaw

As the titular character, much of the story is seen through the eyes of Luca Paguro, the adolescent sea monster who carves out a role for himself on land, too. As the story builds towards its back half, though, it becomes clear that Luca loves to learn as much as he loves to go on adventures.

That passion for school and textbooks and expanding his knowledge basis is a clear tether to the Ravenclaw mindset. If the boarding school he embarked to at the film's end was Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat wouldn't need long on his head.

9 Alberto: Slytherin

Alberto is much less timid than Luca. He has a genuinely free spirit, a sense of exploration, and the occasional belief that he knows better than everyone else. Some of these elements are misguided, but with Alberto, it always stems from a good heart.

That ambitious, stubborn nature found within Alberto is testament enough for his inclusion in the Slytherin brigade. Not every Slytherin is evil, of course. Sometimes, they just land a bit on the wild side.

8 Giulia: Gryffindor

Considering Giulia helps inspire the love of learning within Luca, it might seem like a direct way to tie her to Ravenclaw. Instead, her passion for what she believes in and her loyalty to those she loves paint her more as a Gryffindor.

After all, while Alberto is responsible for getting Luca on shore, it's Giulia who ingratiates both of them into an unfamiliar culture. She's the kind of friend everyone deserves to have, which is a strong testament for a Gryffindor sorting.

7 Ercole: Slytherin

While a Slytherin does not always have to be evil, it's also not a surprise when one is. That's the case for Ercole, the antagonist of Luca who comes with no tragic backstory and no twist to his character. He's just a bad guy.

His cunning nature leads to him bossing around his "friends" and doing whatever it takes to win the Portorosso Cup. From Ercole's first moment on screen, the sneering bully is clear Slytherin material.

6 Daniela: Ravenclaw

A character voiced by the dynamic Maya Rudolph could wind up in any of the four Hogwarts houses. But in the case of Luca's mother, Daniela, she is a solid inclusion in the Ravenclaw house.

Sometimes, the wits she has about her wind up providing more trouble than is necessary. Other times, they enable her to cleverly devise a way to search for her son on land (turning soccer into fountain checking).

5 Lorenzo: Hufflepuff

Luca's father, on the other hand, is bona fide Hufflepuff material. There might actually be no more Hufflepuff actor than Jim Gaffigan, at that point.

Lorenzo is a take-it-easy kind of father who prefers to let people explore the world on their own time. He's simply a gentle figure with a sense of fun and simplicity, aligning him aptly with the Hufflepuff house.

4 Massimo: Gryffindor

At first glance, Massimo is an imposing and intimidating figure. By the film's end, he's instrumental in delivering the film's finalized sense of open-mindedness and a sense of caretaking, and a bond for a character who hadn't quite experienced it before.

Those sorted into Gryffindor tend to follow their own directives, for better or for worse. In the case of Massimo, his individuality is a definite boon, but he's also able to extend it to a place of nurture.

3 Ciccio And Guido: Slytherin

Ciccio and Guido, Ercole's henchmen, have strong Crabbe and Goyle energy. They have a bit more of a turn at the end than the Harry Potter parallel archetypes, but for the majority of the film, they both come down on the side of Slytherin.

They serve the role of dim lackeys who obey most of Ercole's whims. Even when they know how awful he can be, it still takes a great deal of time for them to stand up to him.

2 Grandma Paguro: Ravenclaw

In Disney and Pixar movies, the grandmothers tend to be wise and silly and undeniably free spirits. Grandma Paguro doesn't just march to the beat of her own drummer; she marches to a beat no one else can even imagine, let alone hear.

She never interferes with the parenting of Daniela and Lorenzo, but she's always happy to chime in with her opinion and allow Luca to follow his own ambitions. Rebellion can be dangerous, but with Granda Paguro's wisdom, it's never a concern.

1 Uncle Ugo: Hufflepuff

Lastly, another family member with a bit more minimal screen time was Uncle Ugo, the transparent sea creature who lives in the ocean depths. He has an air of mystery to him, but it's a downtrodden sense from Luca's perspective.

Ultimately, Uncle Ugo falls on the Hufflepuff side of things. He's not a mean figure, but he's just very harmlessly self-involved. He would have no idea how to house and raise a teenager, even if he'd be well-intentioned.
