WWE's Has Narrowed Down Its Official Match Of The Year Contenders To Two

The year is coming to an end and in an attempt to find out which match has been the best of 2022, WWE has been holding a tournament on its YouTube channel. Earlier this month we reported that the company had narrowed the field down to four, and now, with only a few days to go in the current year, WWE has just two matches left in its search for its best match of the last 12 months.

The Final Two

The final two contenders for WWE's match of the year will likely not surprise you. When discussing the very best matches this year, odds are many fans will have landed on these two and found it difficult to choose between them. Cody Rhodes versus Seth Rollins inside Hell in a Cell, and Gunther and Sheamus's hard-hitting bout at Clash at the Castle.

For those of you who need your memories refreshed, the Rhodes vs. Rollins match up for the MOTY award is the third and final one they had at Hell in a Cell. After emerging victorious from their prior two meetings, Rhodes unexpectedly made it to their third match inside the demonic structure despite having torn his pec. An incredible image as The American Nightmare removed his robe to reveal a brutally bruised torso beneath.

The Brutal Clash At The Castle

The other contender for match of the year was brutal for very different reasons. Taking place a few months later when WWE came to the UK for its biggest event in the country since 1992, Gunther was tasked with defending his Intercontinental Title against Sheamus. Although it wasn't the result most fans wanted, the match itself was outstanding and might well be named match of the year by WWE in the coming days.

As for the matches that have now fallen by the wayside, the others that were in WWE's final four were Edge vs. Finn Balor in their I Quit match, and Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Both terrific matches in their own right, but neither deserves to be crowned the best match of 2022 ahead of the bouts that have made it into the official final.
